Cast the Elder Futhark — 24 ancient Norse runes of wisdom, fate, and guidance.
The Elder Futhark is the oldest known runic alphabet, used by Germanic and Norse peoples from the 2nd to 8th centuries CE. Its 24 characters are divided into three families of eight called aettir (singular: aett). Runes were carved into wood, stone, bone, and metal — serving both as a writing system and as tools for divination and ritual.
The word “rune” derives from Proto-Germanic rūnō, meaning “secret” or “whisper.” When casting runes, a merkstave (reversed) position indicates the energy is blocked, internalized, or delayed — not simply negated. Choose a spread above and press Cast the Runes.
Elder Futhark rune meanings based on historical sources: the Old English, Old Icelandic, and Old Norwegian Rune Poems, the Poetic Edda, and archaeological scholarship. Rune symbols rendered as Unicode characters from the Runic block (U+16A0–U+16FF), public domain.
